"The 2003 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre d’Argile, from an 80-year old vineyard situated beside the Beaucastel estate, was cropped at 14 hectoliters per hectare. A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple-tinged color along with a big, earthy, peppery bouquet with loads of blue and black fruits, licorice, and new saddle. There is great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, and the finish possesses supple tannin as well as a voluptuous texture. Consume it over the next 4-5 years.
By the way, visits to this estate are well worth the trip if only to purchase wine, and visitors should be sure to ask to taste the rarest wine made by Janasse, a late harvest sweet cuvee of botrytised Clairette and Roussanne called Les Raisins Perdu. It is an impeccably well-made, intriguing offering, but there is very little produced, and it is only sold at the winery. (90-92)"
