4.5 stars "Old vines produce vines of great depth and concentration of flavour - with often deceptively silky smooth tannins, which are somewhat of a surprise. The 1993 St. Hallett Old Block is a big and very generous red with a profoundly peppery long aftertaste. The wine has been made from vines planted 80-100 years ago and has spent two and a half years in American oak - quite a while. Yet it does not show excessive oak character.Deep brick red colour. The nose displays abundant ripe plum, blackberry, confectionary and vanilla aromas with only minor pepper spice notes - but wait! On the palate and after taste the black peppers sneak up and totally encompass the palates strong blackberry fruit quality. The ripe fruit flavours are in abundance, yet the wine displays remarkable harmony and concentration with just silky smooth tannins. This is a wine that is so easy to drink now or certainly forget for the next 15years. " Best 2012-2012
