"The 2004 Shiraz/Grenache (55% Shiraz from 90-year-old vines and 45% Grenache from 60-year-old vines) was aged 14 months in various-sized barrels of French oak (30% new). The beautiful bouquet offers up scents of acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries, and spicy oak. A wine of considerable elegance and purity with a broad, expansive texture, tremendous depth, and fabulous precision, this knock-out effort should drink well for 7-8 years.
From a new, promising young producer, Stephen Pannell’s debut releases were tasted immediately prior to bottling. A member of the family that founded Mosswood in the Margaret River area of Western Australia, Pannell was the chief red winemaker at Hardy’s between 1999-2003, and did several apprenticeships in France, most notably at Domaine Comte Lafon and Mouton-Rothschild. A believer in non-manipulative winemaking, he is attempting to produce Australian wines with European-styled complexity and finesse without sacrificing the natural raw materials provided by Mother Nature.
