91 points "Clavel’s 2007 Coteaux du Languedoc La Mejanelle La Copa Santa is the latest in a series of Syrah vinified in (partly new) barrels (with small amounts of Grenache and Mourvedre) that began in 1992. He picks very ripe, applies an extended cold soak, and backs off quickly and decisively on extraction once the fermenting wine has acquired significant alcohol. Vivid dark chocolate, brown spice, licorice and fresh black cherry and purple plum mark the nose and palate, with suggestions of roasted meats emerging as the wine opens. Admirably concentrated and youthfully firmly-textured, it finishes with low-toned richness and spicy persistence, while preserving a juicy fresh fruit character, and should be worthy of 8-10 years’ cellaring. "1998 Domaine Clavel La Copa Santa. $15.99. Dark purple ruby color. Nose of dense fruit, with earthy and floral notes, and something akin to tart rhubarb and black cherry aromas. Sweet chewy fruit and mouthfeel, long smooth finish. Very nice job -- again. Aroma score: A- Taste score: A- Overall score: A- "
