"Readers looking for a more tangy, tart, crisp red should check out the 2004 Avenger, a blend of 65% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre, and 10% Grenache. It exhibits loads of black and blue fruits, an uplifted, cool climate palate feel, zesty acidity, and admirable texture as well as freshness in the mouth. Interestingly, Villa Creek offers several of these cuvees in both screw cap and cork. In this case, I preferred the screw cap as it seemed to have more uplifted aromatics. "

"Deep ruby-red. Complex nose melds meaty black fruits, violet and licorice. Broad and sappy, with ripe acids and firm minerality framing and lifting the black fruit flavors. Offers a lovely restrained sweetness. There's something Cote-Rotie-like about this blend. Finishes with nicely managed tannins and excellent persistence."
