3.5 stars "Medium garnet color. Light cassis and rasberry aromas on the nose. Earthy flavors on the palate, getting sweeter and fruitier by the end of the evening."

88 points "Medium red. Aromas of strawberry, rose petal, sassafras and mocha. Supple, sweet and fairly intense, with moderately complex red berry and spice flavors firmed by sound acidity. Offers good stuffing and finishes with easygoing tannins."

"In 1980, twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner began their labor of love when they planted Spring Ridge Vineyards in Portola Valley in the northern part of the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation. Spring Ridge is made up of several separate blocks of vines, each with its own microclimate and soil difference. The vineyard has been dry farmed since 1988. Insecticides have never been used. The grapes are hand-harvested. Wow! "
