"- Dec 2000 - Proprietors Mary and Mike Colhoun, and their talented winemaker, Eric Stern, offer consumers a reasonably priced, complex, Burgundian-styled Chardonnay called Overlook. Utilizing indigenous yeasts to ferment the wine, which comes from virtually every region of California (Sonoma Valley and Russian River being the biggest contributors), this wine spends nine months sur-lie. It goes through complete malolactic, and is not filtered prior to bottling. The good news is that it sells for a song given its quality. Moreover, there are 18,000 cases available! The 1999 Chardonnay Overlook exhibits a smoky, buttery, leesy nose, a subtle yet delicious display of vanillin and what the French call pain grille (toast), and a layered, concentrated style. Given its purity as well as overall depth, it will drink well for 2-3 years.
