90 points "Overall: bold; Ripe full tannins, rustic but not unrefined, with nice fruit leading the way. Superb value."

90 points "90 pts Wine Spectator 5/31/08 Gutsy but polished, with ambitious mocha- and vanilla-tinged toast leading the way for thickly layered plum sauce, fig and currant paste notes. The long, fleshy finish opens up in the glass. Drink now through 2011."

"Another impressive effort and a fantastic follow up to the blockbuster 2005. The just released 2006 Merlot in comparison to the 2005 has more fruit purity and is not quite as influenced as the 2005 was in regards to possessing the savory earth, herbal, char notes. With the 2006 Rust en Vrede the nose starts out with a soft vanilla dusting over dark plum and almost blue fruit tones shaded with a hint of cocoa powder. Medium fuller bodied the tannins are ripe giving the palate a sleek, plush feel. The fruit is higher pitched with dark plum and dark berry flavors with excellent length and depth. This is impressive for its fruit purity and intensity. We worked this wine for over 3 days and it just rolled along without missing a beat. The higher toned pitch to the fruit coupled with good acidity and a seamless tannin structure suggest that this should drink exceptional over the next 5-6 years easily."
