Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
Polish and refinement may not be this wine's virtues, but clear-cut varietal spice and richness win it the nod all the same. It is well-ripened, a touch gamy and well-extracted throughout, and its gruff, acid-pushed tannins do not quite take control. Still, it is a wine that will be much improved by keeping, and, if a wait of three or four years will work in its favor, it should continue to grow for twice that time.

Inky ruby. Bright, finely etched aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, cracked pepper and licorice, with a smoky overtone. Deep, juicy and precise, with energetic flavors of bitter cherry, candied dark berries and violet and pastilles. Dense but surprisingly lively, with superb finishing clarity and alluring floral persistence. This wine is extremely attractive now but balanced to age.
