5 stars "Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Made from a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz the wine was matured for 13 months in 34% new American oak hogsheads with the balance in seasoned American oak. Totally opaque black crimson colour with black heart and deep black dark red hue. The nose displays good perfumed lift with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and liquorice followed by a hint of vanillin spice as an end note. Full bodied, generous and rich this is one of the more opulent Bin 389’s. Mouthfilling ripe blackcurrant and blackberry flavours are followed by some dark chocolate, liquorice and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. Excellent concentration with very long aftertaste of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and vanillin oak. Cellar 5-6 years (2016-2017) Alc 14.5% " Best 2016-2017

94 points "Black fruit, a little pepper, choc-liquorice and mint backed with toasty oak. It’s rich and ripe with grunty tannin laid on thick delivering a classic 389 mouthful of fruit tempered by some meat and coal-like savoury flavours. It’s not heavy or porty, although it’s large scale, and has the requisite fruit power and structure to see it age well for decades. As a young wine it puts me in mind of the 1998, although this is more approachable and even-tempered. An excellent 389.
