"Dark ruby, with a garnet edge. Violet, toasty oak, blackberry and plum. Full-bodied, with amazing fruit and super-ripe tannins. It's velvety and powerful. Still needs a lot of time. Spellbinding. Huge.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2010. 350 cases made. –JS

"Wine Advocate
1996 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra—The 1996 Ciabot Mentin Ginestra is a wine of extraordinary balance. It displays a captivating, nuanced nose of menthol, spices, cocoa, oak, and licorice followed by layers of dark fruit that continually unfold in the glass. The tannins have softened somewhat, but this remains a young wine in need of a few more years of cellaring. If I had to pick one wine that captures this producer at his very best, the 1996 Ciabot would be at the top of my list. I fell in love with this wine when it was released and it never ceases to amaze for its superb elegance and harmony. Drink after 2008, 10/05
Score: 96. —Antonio Galloni, January 2006.
International Wine Cellar
Saturated red-ruby. Somewhat reticent yet precise aromas of black cherry, minerals and brown spices. Less sweet and more backward than the Pajana, but chewy with extract. Firm acids and tannins give this remarkably rich wine a powerful backbone. This closed up like a bivalve in the glass. Likely to be the best of these '96s with several years of bottle aging.
Score: 94. —Stephen Tanzer, November 2000.
Wine Spectator
Tasted from magnum. Shows fabulous fruit on the nose, with raspberry and blackberry, that follows through to rose and other flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Very fresh and bright, yet complex.--1996 Piedmont retrospective. Best after 2008. 1,065 cases made.
Score: 94. —James Suckling, 2007.
