5 stars "Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Made from a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz the wine was matured for 13 months in 34% new American oak hogsheads with the balance in seasoned American oak. Totally opaque black crimson colour with black heart and deep black dark red hue. The nose displays good perfumed lift with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and liquorice followed by a hint of vanillin spice as an end note. Full bodied, generous and rich this is one of the more opulent Bin 389’s. Mouthfilling ripe blackcurrant and blackberry flavours are followed by some dark chocolate, liquorice and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. Excellent concentration with very long aftertaste of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and vanillin oak. Cellar 5-6 years (2016-2017) Alc 14.5% " Best 2016-2017

95 points "Deep red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is savoury and lightly smoky, with some sooty, charcoal nuances and the faintest glimpse of cabernet blackberries. The palate is dense and almost chewy, thickly coated with tannin and filled with a good balance of savoury and fruit notes. The tannins really finish right out and the finale is long. A seriously good 389 for long cellaring. (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Wrattonbully & Coonawarra)" Best 2025-2035
