"Ripe black fruit and dark chocolate notes followed by a long smooth finish. Drinking well now. "

"The dense purple-tinged 2003 IX Proprietary Red (a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - also a change from barrel) is a 1,280-case cuvee revealing deep, rich blue as well as black fruits, hints of licorice and creosote, a smoky, Graves-like, hot rocks character, moderately high tannin, and a full-bodied finish. Give it 2-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 05
(15.6% alcohol; a blend of 64% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot) Saturated deep ruby. Roasted black raspberry and fla mboyant chocolatey oak on the nose. Lush and seamless, with a texture of liquid velvet. Compelling, primary flavors of blackberry, chocolate and flowers. Perhaps best today on the huge, rising finish, which features substantial but utterly lush tannins that reach the front teeth and great lingering sweetness. This will be just the second commercial vintage from the steep hillsides around this mountaintop winery overlooking Lake Hennessey 93-96 points

($175) Ruby-red. Explosive aromas of black raspberry, minerals, graphite and flowers. Wonderfully sweet and dense, with a superripe suggestion of maple syrup and a note of hot rocks. Finishes with huge, chewy but well-buffered tannins and a lingering note of caramel. Perhaps the least lively today of these 2003s, but winemaker Aubert notes that the 2003 vintage in general here brought higher-than-average acidity. 93 points

"A firmly tannic, rustic youngster. Bold and intense. Manages to serve up enough ripe currant, berry and herb flavors to balance the significant tannins. Despite the tannins, there's a wealth of concentrated fruit flavors to savor. Decant. Best from 2007 through 2012. 1,200 cases made. –JL
