90 points "Readers looking for a tasty, delicious St.-Emilion that can be enjoyed at a young age should check out this value pick. This dense purple-hued, intense fruit bomb exhibits flamboyant notes of smoke, black raspberries, cherries, and graphite. A big, deep, full-bodied wine with tremendous opulence as well as tannin and structure in the background, it should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for 15 or more. It is a sleeper of the vintage." Best 2009-2022

92 points "Here’s a great 2005 Bordeaux value – in fact, the Chateau Pipeau is one of just five ‘05 Bordeaux under $32 with a Wine Spectator rating of 92 points or better. Robert Parker says “Readers looking for a tasty, delicious St.-Emilion that can be enjoyed at a young age should check out this value pick...it is a hedonistic sleeper of the vintage...One of St.-Emilion’s true exuberant fruit bombs, the explosively rich, intense 2005 is the finest Pipeau I have ever tasted." Made from 90% merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 12 months. The Chateau, located close to the heart of St. Emilion, is surrounded by vineyards planted with 40 year old vines. Chateau Pipeau has been scoring consistently well since the 2000 vintage, when proprietor Richard Mestreguilhem revamped vineyard management and winemaking methods in an effort to put them on a "path towards quality." It has certainly paid off – the 2004 vintage (WS91 points) made the Wine Spectator 100 list. Although made for immediate enjoyment, with enough will power you can cellar the ’05 Pipeau for another 10-15 years. A fruit-driven, sumptuous wine, this beauty totally over-delivers. Not likely to remain under the radar for long, here's a terrific chance to grab one of the sleepers of the vintage. Wine Spectator, Mar 2008, 92 points: "Beautiful blackberry, cherry and light vanilla aromas follow through to a full body, with coffee, smoke and berry character. Long and stylish. Velvety and balanced. Best after 2013. 15,830 cases made. –JS"" Wine Advocate, Apr 2008, 90 points: "What a decadent, fruit-driven St.-Emilion! From a proprietor who delivers the goods in an upfront, gorgeously luscious, hedonistic manner, this lovely fruit-bomb reveals a dense purple color, a perfumed nose of sweet black cherries and black currants, incense, roasted herbs, and oak. Fleshy, full-bodied, and more structured than previous vintages (because of the vintage character), it is a hedonistic sleeper of the vintage that can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.""
