97 points "- Jan 2003 - The 1989 is inkier/purple in color than the 1990, with an extraordinarily sweet, rich personality offering up notes of smoke, melted licorice, black cherries, Asian spices, and cassis. Full-bodied and concentrated, it is one of the most powerful as well as highly extracted Beaucastels I have ever tasted. It requires another 3-4 years to reach its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for at least two decades. (Many purchasers have reported bottle leakage (due to a cork problem) with this vintage. I purchased two cases of this wine, but none of my bottles reveal any sign of leakage. A good friend of mine, Dr. Jay Miller, owner of Bin 604 Wine Sellers in Baltimore, has consistently had a problem with “corked” bottles of the 1989, but no leakage.) - June 2000 - 1989 is one of Beaucastel's most successful vintages. Delicious young, it continues to age slowly as well as positively. The only problem has been reports about defective corks causing leakage (I bought several cases of this wine and have experienced no such problems). The wine's dark ruby/purple color reveals slight pink developing at the rim. Intense aromas of pepper, dried herbs, new saddle leather, spice box, truffles, Asian spices, and black currant/berry fruit are followed by a full-bodied, moderately tannic wine with superb concentration. This youthful Chateauneuf du Pape should continue to age well for 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015 - Dec 95 - The sumptuous 1989 possesses an intense black/ruby/purple color. The nose offers a veritable smorgasbord of jammy cassis, Provencal herbs, Asian spices, fruitcake, coffee, and hickory wood. The wine is sensationally concentrated and well balanced, with soft tannin and enough acidity to provide balance and freshness. Full-bodied, with layers of fruit and glycerin, it can be drunk now because of its lavish richness, yet it should age for 20 + more years. It should exceed the quality of the superb 1981. " Best 2006-2023
