"The 2005 Ampelos Vineyard Syrah is once again the biggest, thickest, chewiest, deepest and most primary syrah of the vintage. It has no new oak, yet gobs of tannin. The best designated syrah of the vintage. Only three barrels of this wine were made from first year fruit. This powerful wine is balanced, dark and complete. (80 cases produced)"

"Jaffurs’ wines continue to go from strength to strength, and recent vintages have been the finest I have yet tasted from this producer. The most powerful offering here in terms of alcoholic clout, the 2005 Syrah Ampelos Vineyard, from the cool Santa Rita Hills appellation, exhibits gamy, smoky, spicy notes with hints of meat, underbrush, roasted herbs, and anise. Primary, dense, layered, full-bodied, and rich with superb fruit, it requires another year or so to settle down and add more complexity. A knock-out effort, it will enjoy 10-12 years of graceful life."
