93 points "The 2005 Syrah Obsidian is a 540-case cuvee offering a beautiful black/purple color as well as sumptuous aromas of blackberries, scorched earth, smoke, and frying lard. It’s a big, full-bodied, powerful effort that, like its siblings, will not be very charming in its youth. It will require 3-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20-25 years. " Best 2010-2031

94 points "Inky ruby. A huge, room-filling bouquet of dark cherry, blackcurrant, candied violet and licorice offers enormous sex appeal and great clarity. Lush, inky and powerfully built, with impressively energetic dark berry and cherry compote flavors. Very fine tannins add support but this is almost too big for its pants. Lovely boysenberry and mulberry flavors are given focus by subtle minerality, with the finish showing outstanding focus and persistence. I was really struck by the mix of ripeness and freshness here.
