" Created by the legendary Max Schubert, the mind behind of Penfolds Grange, Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange' or 'Baby Grange,' in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Grapes are sourced from Padthaway, Bordertown and McLaren Vale, with smaller contributions from Barossa, Kalimna and Robe. In 2001, good winter rains gave all key South Australian regions a very good start. Fruit set was excellent and vineyard management to reduce crop loads ensured the vines were in good shape to continue ripening throughout the season. Summers rains and the ensuing fine conditions meant both Cabernet and Shiraz crops reached full ripeness and optimal condition at harvest. Matured for13 months in new (22%) and older American Oak, this will impress those who, Like Parker, favor big, strapping, opulent reds. Aromas of white chocolate, vanilla pod and loganberry flanked by spicy oak dominate. On the palate there are layers of blackcurrant and blueberry set against a firm base of ripe tannins and finely integrated oak. An impressively solid finish with an inky, complexity and wonderful length. A prime candidate for classic Bin 389 status and long term development in the bottle."

"There's a minty thing in this Bin 389 that sets it apart from most recent vintages, but it remains a very attractive style. The nose has syrupy black-fruit and choc-mint aromas with a positive input of smoky-vanillin oak. In the mouth it has typical velvet smoothness, but with blackcurrant syrup and vanilla flavours that are less voluptuous than usual. It has good texture and balanced ripe tannins. Overall an elegant 389. Serve it with Cantonese red-cooked beef."
