Tasting Notes:
rated: November 30, 2004 , K&L Wine Merchants
" Apaltagua specializes in one rather esoteric grape varietal: carmenère. Known as the "lost Bordeaux" variety, it was originally planted in Bordeaux but was abandoned due to its characteristic late ripening habits. Too late ripening for the Bordeaux climate. Thankfully, the carmenère variety was imported to Chile where it not only survived (because of Chile's longer growing season), but where it has gone into some of the country's most exceptional wines. Apaltagua produces three levels of carmenère-based wines. For the Grial extreme measures were taken in fruit selection, which results in a rich, extracted and bold wine capable of many years of extended cellaring. The seductive flavors of blackberry, grilled peppers and dark, spicy cherry linger on the palate. Only 422 cases were produced. A must for the South American fanatic or anyone who likes dark, brooding reds."
