96 points "An awesome wine, only made in the greatest vintages, the 1996 Shiraz/Cabernet The Reserve (only 50 six-packs available for the USA), is nearly as spectacular as the 1998. A rich, full-bodied, concentrated effort revealing tremendous fruit depth, enormous power and weight as well as impeccable balance and purity, it should hit its prime in 2-3 years, and last for 15+." 96 points "There’s been some talk of ‘birth wines’ on this site of late – if you have a child born in 2002, this little beauty from Yalumba would be a very nice choice. It’s a blend of 78 percent cabernet sauvignon and 22 percent shiraz, all of which was grown in the Barossa Valley. The 2002 vintage was of course an exceptionally cool year in these parts i.e. a good cabernet year. It was matured for 22 months in all French oak, 50 percent of it new. Eight years old but beautifully fresh. Characterised by its profound persistence. Tremendously fine tannin, too. Mint, tobacco, blackcurrant and cedary, spicy chocolate. Acidity is cleansing, oak is not overdone, fruit is as lively as it is lovely. Beautiful Australian red. 552 dozen made. 94 points "This wine still has a fair way to go; essency and concentrated black fruits are complemented by a fairly substantial amount of cedary oak; the wine is gloriously complex and multilayered, and despite its raw power, shows great restraint; it needs time to fully come together, an issue that is dependant on the cork doing its job.
