94 points "2006 was a very strong vintage in McLaren Vale producing highly concentrated reds. Spectacular black purple colour with black purple hue. Excellent cling. Top note of blackberry juice followed by spice, vanilla and liquorice allsorts. Big peppery palate, with flavours of black pepper and blackberry. Fine dry, slightly chalky tannins. Aftertaste of blackberry, vanilla and spice. Cellar 4-5 years (2011-2012) Alc/Vol: 14.5%"

95 points "From 40-year-old vines, open-fermented, basket-pressed and aged for 16 months in French and American oak. Deeply coloured, it has an opulent but not jammy bouquet and palate, with a range of blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate fruit supported by positive, though not aggressive oak and ripe tannins. Drink 2008-2015 with grilled T-bone steak"

"Shiraz is what McLaren Vale consistently does best and this is no exception. This is a real mouth full of flavour, dark berries and mocha flavours well balanced with silky smooth tannins and good acid. Food match: A classic mixed grill"

4 stars "Gemtree 2006 Uncut Shiraz sells for $20 at cellar door and is sealed under screwcap. The bouquet was lifted with perfumed violet fruit, aniseed, chocolate, and a slight leasely character. This is a bloody smart, clean, modern Australian wine driven by pure fruit and well backed by fresh acid and silky tannins. It's ample-weight with a supple consistency, a solid, harmonious structure and a well developed complexity. It's savoury and spicy but there is a slight sweetness to the lingering finish. Plum, chocolate, aniseed and black pepper flavours complete the profile. There was no Obsidian made so the fruit that would have been destined for their icon Shiraz wine went into the Uncut. Rated as Recommended with **** for value if you can find it on special, it would get five stars for value. It's approachable now, but will last for ages"
