"90-92 points: The flagship estate of Stephan von Neipperg, the 2002 Canon-la-Gaffeliere outperforms its two sibling rivals, Clos de l'Oratoire and the rare as well as very expensive garage wine, La Mondotte. This offering exhibits a saturated blue/plum/purple color in addition to a big, spicy perfume of smoke, graphite, coffee, black currants, and new oak. The flavors add cocoa as well as an assortment of black fruits and licorice to the mix. With wonderful concentration and succulence as well as a moderately tannic finish, it will be at its finest between 2006-2020."

"One of the greatest Canon-la-Gaffeliere ever made: big body, complex nose, tannin very deftly extracted without any sharpness, great length. Owes much to the Cabernet Franc content of the blend. Drink from 2015. (18 points)"

90 points
"This is one of St.-Emilion's most impressively constituted and expressive wines. From its saturated purple color, to its soaring aromatics (pain grille, jammy black fruits, chocolate, roasted coffee, and smoke), this full-bodied, meaty, chewy, powerful wine is loaded with extract, sweet tannin for the vintage, and possesses a layered, multidimensional finish. It should continue to improve for a decade, and drink well for 15-20 years."
