"Napa's Smith-Madrone has done it! They've made a butt-kickin' cabernet that's big on the palate without harsh tannins. The 2003 vintage comes from 32-year old dry-farmed vines from the Spring Mountain District and is aged for 22 months in new American oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result? A wine with an intriguing nose of briar fruits and black cherries combined with notes of crushed violets, lavender and dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is full and smooth with a velvety mouthfeel and big fruit. Enjoy with grilled steak with sautéed mushrooms or roasted leg of lamb."

"Three Stars from the San Francisco Chronicle: "Who says California can't produce elegant, refined Cabernet? This medium-full-bodied wine isn't fat and ultra ripe, but rather restrained in the traditional Bordeaux style. There is plenty of black-cherry fruit wrapped in a blanket of cedar, tobacco, menthol and spice, and oak is there for texture rather than flavoring.""
