90 points " Domaine des Lambrays Print 2008 barrel Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Red Note: produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age Producer note: As he did last year for 2007, régisseur (resident manager) Thierry Brouin called the summer of 2008 "lousy. You had to be really vigilant as to mildew and botrytis, making sure that the canopy did not have too much fruit and was well aerated. We began picking on the 25th of September and did a really severe sorting job. I told the pickers that if they wouldn't eat it, don't keep it. What we did keep amounted to the equivalent of only 26 hl/ha though the fruit was quite ripe and I used 100% of the stems in the vinification just as I did in 2007. The malos were quite extended and I really wasn't sure what the wines were going to be like once they finished. Now that it's possible to more easily evaluate them, I really like the vintage and would compare it to 1990." I was more than a little surprised by a vintage comparison to 1990 and I will say that Brouin was the only one to invoke that particular comparison. Tasting note: This is more deeply pitched still with much more obvious earth and floral influences to the ripe red and blue pinot fruit that complement the rich, pure and detailed medium weight flavors that culminate in a dusty and mouth coating finish where the supporting tannins seem to be on the dry side though this could easily be due to the considerable gas. For now I remain cautiously optimistic that this will round into shape as the fruit seems ripe and the two preceding wines do not exhibit this dryness. Tasted: Jan 30, 2010 Score: (90-92?) "90-93 points: Good deep red. Highly nuanced nose combines strawberry, raspberry, minerals, Oriental spices and pungent oak. Juicy and vibrant but also fat and lush, with strawberry, redcurrant and mocha flavors lifted by spicy oak. This shows the deep sweetness of the vintage, and finishes very long, with suave tannins and obvious oakiness..."
