92 points "By Stephen Tanzer Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May 12 (includes the fruit that normally comprises Carlisle's Cardiac Hill syrah bottling, along with fruit from the Steiner vineyard; 35% new French oak): Inky ruby. An explosively perfumed bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, black tea, licorice and smoky Indian spices. Lush, palate-staining black and blue fruit flavors show noteworthy intensity and focus and pick up a floral pastille nuance with air. Finishes broad and sweet, leaving smoke and licorice notes behind. 92 points" Best 2013-

"70% Bennett Valley Syrah, 23% Russian River Valley Syrah, 7% Paso Robles Syrah From a collection of mostly cool climate vineyards, the bulk of the fruit for this wine was picked in the first week of November. Yields ranged from 1.0 to 3.0 tons to the acre. Aged in all French oak, 36% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Very dark black-ruby. Nearly opaque. Wickedly dark, luscious aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and a dash of vanilla. Mmmmm! Impressively concentrated yet quite suave in texture with fine grained tannins on the finish. Much more showy than the 2004 at this stage yet lower alcohol as well. Drink 2008 through 2014." Best 2008-2014

"Black ruby/purple. Opaque. Black raspberries and white pepper leap from the glass. In fact, the first time I tried it from barrel I thought I had pulled a sample of Carlisle Vineyard Zinfandel! On the palate, huge, totally mouth-coating. Like dry black raspberry cordial. A real "toe curler" as one female barrel taster remarked. Although this syrah will drink well on release, with its healthy acidity, it should provide pleasure through 2012. (MRO - 8/7/05)" Best 2005-2012
