3.5 stars "Very nice, smooth, fruity. One of the best Pinot Noirs I've had this year."

92 points "Walter Schug is one of the pioneers of the wine industry and in addition to help making the name of Phelps winery, the Eiselee and Bacchus Vineyards, he has grown his namesake winery into a solid producer of Chardonnay and Pinot noir. This 2009 Winemaker’s Reserve Pinot has fruit from the top vineyard sites including their own Estate, Sangiacomo, Ricci and the Cornerstones. It spent 9 months in medium toast French oak barrels, 30% of which was new. I recently visited the winery and sampled with the winemaker and Axel Schug and tasted some very nice Pinots from the 80s and 90s that are incredibly still holding up well. A ruby red hue. Boasting pleasant aromas of dark raspberry, cranberry and cherries with touches of sassafras and flowers. It exhibits a layered cool climate red fruit profile of wild strawberries, sweet cherries, kirsch and cinnamon. Nicely textured, layered and silky with a clean finish. Enjoy over the next several years. Pair with King Salmon, grilled shrimp, roast duckling in a bing cherry sauce, fried oysters, or soft shell crabs." Best 2011-2014
